3 Logo Variations Every Brand Needs

Did you know that your company logo branding should have multiple variations?

Your company’s logo is the primary embodiment of your brand. It’s a visual that will appear on every piece of online content and physical merchandise associated with your product or service. From a logo variation branding perspective, your logo is the icon that people will instantly recognize as part of your brand, every time.

A logo is arguably the most important component of your brand identity and can make or break your brand recognition. Think about some of the world’s most well-known logos, like Nike, Amazon, McDonald’s, Starbucks, FedEx, Sony, Coca-Cola, Apple, or Levi’s. When you hear those brand names, you immediately think of the logo, right?

That instantly-recognizable flair should be part of your brand, too. You want customers and prospects to think of you right away any time they encounter your logo. Logo variation styles might appear on logo-branded merchandise, product packaging, your social media accounts, or your website.

Three Logo Variations Your Brand Should Have

Corporate logo decoration should come in at least three variations so your branding looks right at home wherever it appears.

  1. Primary Logo: Your primary logo is the main logo you’ll use for the majority of your company logo branding. It will display your business name and appear on all your major marketing materials, your website, and your business cards.
  2. Secondary Logo: A secondary logo is a spin-off of the primary and may be arranged differently. It will still contain your brand name and the same visual elements but may be oriented in such a way that you can scale it down or display it in a wider variety of places.
  3. Submark or Icon: Your submark can be used as a watermark or social media icon. It’s a compact element of your primary logo and likely won’t include any text (such as your business name).

How Will My Logo Look on Different Materials?

Wondering how your logo variation branding might look on different materials?

Different products and materials can affect your logo’s look and make it stand out in different ways. In some cases, you might want to feature your secondary logo or submark on logo-branded merch. It all really depends on how it’s going to show up!

For more information, see our guides to Decoration Methods and Fabrics. They'll give you a better idea of which logo variation styles you should be using on your logo-branded corporate gifts and merch (like whether your logo would look better embroidered or screen-printed, for example).
