June 8 is World Oceans Day. The purpose of this annual holiday is to raise awareness across the globe around the affects of water pollution and to expand opportunities for ocean conservation.
Did you know that the ocean is filled with nearly 165 million tons of plastic? A typical American uses 167 plastic bottles of water annually: that’s fifty-four billion, one hundred eight million bottles in total, most of which are not recycled. In fact, the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation found that only 14% of plastic packaging produced in the world is recycled each year, making plastic the largest source of pollution in the oceans.
That is the equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute.
If this trend continues, it’s estimated that by 2050 the amount of plastic that pollutes the ocean will weigh more than the fish who live in it! It’s clear that it will take the actions of MANY to reverse this trend, but the question remains: what can YOU do to make an impact and stem the flow of plastic into the ocean?
